Sharp Debuts Smartphone, the Aquos Crystal

Sharp may not be synonymous with smartphones in the U.S., but the tech manufacturer — mostly known for its TVs — is bringing its phones over to the States. (They've long existed in Japan.)
The company launched its Aquos Crystal smartphone in the U.S. on Tuesday, one of two handsets that it is also launching in Japan. In the U.S., the device will be available exclusively through Sprint and its prepaid services, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile.

Sharp and SoftBank, Sprint's new owner, announced the device ahead of its press event in New York City on Wednesday. The event's tagline, "take the edge off," is likely a reference to the Aquos Crystal's borderless HD display, which runs right to the edge of the phone.
The 5-inch device runs Android 4.4.2 "KitKat" and features a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Other specs include a 8MP rear camera, a 1.2MP front camera, 1.5GB (RAM) and 8GB internal memory (with expansion capability up to 128GB).
The Aquos Crystal comes in two color options, black or white, and will be priced at $199 through Virgin Mobile USA and Boost Mobile. The device promises improved sound quality of compressed audio files, thanks to built-in Harman’s Clari-Fi technology.
Sharp also announced another smartphone, the Aquos Crystal X, but that device is exclusive to Japan as of now. It comes with a larger 5.5-inch display, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

Slimmer Square Reader unveiled in Phon

Square mobile payment system has introduced an updated version of its credit card reader. The Square Reader attaches to one’s iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone and it becomes a mobile payment tool that swipes credit cards.
The new Square Reader has a slimmer form factor and does not require any batteries to function. The gadget also has a faster processor, a new reader for improved swipe accuracy. This is the first redesign for the hardware since it was lauched in 2009, aiming to help small businesses to complete transactions with card-carrying customers.
The card reader also has an enhanced audio plug, enabling it to be plugged into most mobile device instead of just having a Lightning plug that only works with more recent iPhone and iPad models. The Square Reader can also power itself when plugged into the phone or tablet, eliminating the need to include that bulky battery and making it almost just as slim as the iPhone 5S.
The company’s vice president of hardware, Jesse Dorogusker, is the man behind the major redesign. A former long-time Apple employee, he spent eight years in that company’s accessories division. Dorogusker’s time with Apple reflected on the new Square Reader and its simple design.
Users do not have to worry about buying the updated reader because Square gives them for free. Just sign up for Square’s website and access the accompanying app.

New Acer C270 Chromebook

Acer launches a Chromebook it claims to be better than your Chromebook. The 11.6-inch Acer C270 Chromebook packs a fourth-generation Intel Core i3 processor, the same one available in more powerful laptops.
Ordinary Chromebooks used mobile processors such as those from Samsung or the Intel Atom line, making Acer the first company to unveil a Chromebook with a new line of “high-performance” chips. This enables the Acer C270 Chromebook to address the problem commonly encountered among similar computers: the lack of a multitasking ability. Users of the C270 need not worry about their Chromebook slowing down even with several browser tabs open.
With the Haswell processor, this Chromebook can handle multiple tasks while providing a decent battery life–in this case, up to 8.5 hours. Also, booting up the laptop only takes seven seconds.
And like other Chromebooks, the Acer C270 is relies its storage on the cloud, but theirs has 32GB instead of the 16GB seen on similar laptops. It also has USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, as well as HDMI.
The Acer C270 Chromebook comes in two versions (with 2GB or 4GB of RAM), which are priced at $349.99 and $379.99, respectively.
