Sharp may not be
synonymous with smartphones in the U.S., but the tech manufacturer —
mostly known for its TVs — is bringing its phones over to the States.
(They've long existed in Japan.)
The company launched its Aquos Crystal smartphone in the U.S. on
Tuesday, one of two handsets that it is also launching in Japan. In the
U.S., the device will be available exclusively through Sprint and its
prepaid services, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile.

Sharp
and SoftBank, Sprint's new owner, announced the device ahead of its
press event in New York City on Wednesday. The event's tagline, "take
the edge off," is likely a reference to the Aquos Crystal's borderless
HD display, which runs right to the edge of the phone.
The 5-inch device runs Android 4.4.2 "KitKat" and features a 1.2GHz
quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Other specs include a 8MP rear
camera, a 1.2MP front camera, 1.5GB (RAM) and 8GB internal memory (with
expansion capability up to 128GB).
The Aquos Crystal comes in two color options, black or white, and
will be priced at $199 through Virgin Mobile USA and Boost Mobile. The
device promises improved sound quality of compressed audio files, thanks
to built-in Harman’s Clari-Fi technology.
Sharp also announced another smartphone, the Aquos Crystal X, but
that device is exclusive to Japan as of now. It comes with a larger
5.5-inch display, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM and 32GB
of storage.
